The month of October is devoted to World Mental Health Month and today, Thursday, 10 October, is World Mental Health Day.

At HLB Mann Judd Insolvency WA, we regularly meet with people that are doing it tough in their businesses. And that, more often than not, means life in general is pretty challenging.

Small and medium enterprises are typically family affairs, so when we meet with directors, their partners come to the meetings too. That way, everyone can understand how a certain situation might play out, and what those outcomes might mean to the family unit – the family home, reputation, lifestyles and school fees. We see the stress first hand and what it can do to relationships and an individual’s disposition.

An underperforming business can have a significant impact on directors, business owners and their families and extended networks. We are always cognisant of the cross overs between business affairs and personal affairs. And that means we go the extra mile to address issues that are not listed on a balance sheet and we listen to the concerns of the people we meet with.

In this regard, Beyond Blue has developed an online suite of tools called Heads Up, all aimed at creating mentally healthy workplaces. These tools promote mentally healthy workplaces generally – like work/life balance, how to look after yourself as a small business owner and how to lead staff towards a healthy and productive frame of mind.

You can access the resources here.

The tools also encourage the notion of talking about vulnerabilities and getting help early to address issues before they get out of hand.

So if you are meeting with your clients and you get a sense that they might be going through a tough time, please consider sharing the Heads Up tools with them. You never know what sort of positive impact you might have on them.

And if any clients ever need some guidance on insolvency, you can be assured that our approach is to treat people with respect and dignity, often in some of their toughest days.
